This year Eye Saints Community Boules Club entered two teams into the Winter league. Eye Saints, Division 3, consisting of Eira, Darren and Gill and Eye Sinners, Division 4, consisting of Rob, Steve and Mary.
On Sunday 1 November both teams were scheduled to play a match at home. Saints v Wheatsheaf Ice Dogs and Sinners v Cuckoos.
The Saints started with a triples game, which began well as Saints pulled ahead quickly. At one stage we thought we would ‘fanny’ the opposition, but they managed to pull back a couple of points, finishing the game with an Eye Saints win 13-2.
The second game was a doubles, with Eira and Gill making a good start and leading 7-0 at one stage. The Ice Dogs gradually found their form and distance and began to pull back until the score reached 11-12. Eye Saints managed to take the final end and won the game 13-11.
Darren played the singles game, which was a very tight affair with each player taking the lead alternately until the score reached 11-12, with Darren on 11. However, his perseverance and accuracy saw him take the game 13-12.
Eye Sinners got off to a good start to the Winter season. They played a close triples against the Cuckoos, who fielded a strong team of Darryl, Jeff and Darryl’s grandson Malachi, who is new to the sport. It was a tight match which we lost 11 – 13.
Steve and Mary took on Jeff and Malachi in the doubles, and won convincingly 13 – 4 (despite an erroneous report circulated which claimed they had lost). All credit to Malachi who really found his feet and played some brilliant balls.
Rob lost a tough singles against the formidable Darryl, and lost 8 – 13.
So despite losing 2 – 1, we scored more points than our opponents and enjoyed our first home game as the Sinners.
